Key American Baptist Beliefs
-
We Believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, our path to a personal relationship with God, and that the Bible is the divinely inspired word of God that serves as the final written authority for living out the Christian faith. We continue to have Bible Studies for all ages on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.
-
The local church is the fundamental unit of mission in denominational life. Local congregations are responsible for articulating their own doctrine, style of worship, and mission. We have times of study and fellowship where we examine God's Word as it instructs our lives.
-
We have two ordinances: Baptism by immersion af those who can profess their experience with Christ; and The Lord's Supper, which is open to any who have accepted Christ's sacrifice and believe that the elements represent the broken body and shed blood offered by Christ to recall God's great love for us.
-
We believe that Christians can and should approach God directly and that we must share our Spiritual Gifts of ministry. We encourage individual and group prayer times where there is opportunity to commune with God personally and corporately.
-
We take seriously the call to evangelism and missionary work. We feel a responsibility to share our faith, not just from the pulpit, but also in our conversations.
-
We support religious freedom and agree that God's family is bigger than our local churches, leading us to cooperative ministries. We support ecumenical efforts, locally, nationally, and throughout the world.
-
Following Christ's example, we advocate justice and wholeness in a broken society, and we celebrate the diversity within our fellowship. We affirm the need to follow Christ's example by being actively involved in changing society.
-
American Baptists recognize that each of us must become a new creature in Christ, and we recognize the need for a vital, transforming witness relevant to a new millennium.
